Array-ne In a post on MSN Search’s Weblog, Ken Moss (GM, MSN Search) says:In collaboration with Chris Burges and other friends from Microsoft Research, we now have a brand new ranker. This new ranker also is based on technology with an awesome name — it’s a Neural Net.Microsoft Researcher Chris Burges was the lead author on a 2005 paper called Learning to Rank using Gradient Descent that does appear to try to use neural networks for relevance rank. While applying machine learning techniques to relevance rank for web search is common, using neural networks is not. We take a bunch of data, propagate it through the network (basically, take a bunch of weighted sums of the inputs and munch them together), and get values out of the network. This is supervised learning, so we start with a bunch of data that says things like, For a search for personalized news, the most relevant search result is Findory.com. We then take that and a bunch of other data, run it through our network, and try to teach our system to do the right thing, to always say Findory.com when we ask what the most relevant search result is for a query for personalized news. The tricky part of this is training the network, which means learning what all the weights should be on all the links in the network.

I especially like this snippet from Sanaz’s blog: so we get to scoble’s office, pick him up and drive back to redwest to steve’s office to do the interview!!! (My blog high-fives your blog!) This all happened about the same time I re-read Mr. Lippert’s How Many Microsoft Employees Does it Take to Change a Lightbulb? paper, the personal blogs that include work-life gripes, the employee negative comments within blogs, and the anonymous blogs like this one are "steam-blowing" Come on, outsourcing can not be consuming computer science jobs at that rapid of a rate, especially given the low quality programming results I’ve seen from overseas so far. Finally, one theme that pops up quite often in folks who post comments here and say they used to be Microsofties but left and now work elsewhere is: life is so much better now that I don’t work at Microsoft. I’m just one terrified voice screaming from the back seat that we’ve taken a horrendously wrong turn into a bad, bad neighborhood (Cut Alley, Product-Slip Row, and naked emperors in .NET stockings on every corner - shudder) and need to turn this car around and get back on the right route.

If Europe defaulted to Euro scepticism, or if European nations faced with this immense challenge, decide to huddle together, hoping we can avoid globalisation, shrink away from confronting the changes around us, take refuge in the present policies of Europe as if by constantly repeating them, we would by the very act of repetition make them more relevant, then we risk failure. This is not a time to accuse those who want Europe to change of betraying Europe.
