Congratulations to Jason!Samuel Johnson and Metaphorical Propriety There is a famous passage in Samuel Johnson’s Life of Denham which has confused critics and produced a variety of interpretations. Before we can assess Johnson’s exact meaning, we must determine what he refers to when he uses the word “comparison.” William Edinger supposes that the “comparison” Johnson refers to is the antithesis of terms in each clause. According to Edinger, “If Johnson’s observation that one side of each comparison is to be understood ‘simply’ i.e., literally, and the other side metaphorically were true of all, then ‘deep,’ ‘gentle,’ ‘strong,’ and ‘full’ would describe the Thames, while ‘clear,’ ‘not dull,’ ‘without rage,’ and ‘without o’erflowing’ would only describe qualities of style, Denham’s ‘tenor.’” (598). Here Edinger has interpreted Johnson’s statement to mean that, in each antithesis the first term literally applies to the river and the second term metaphorically applies to the intellect. One out of four comparisons would not justify Johnson’s use of the term “most.” It seems doubtful that Johnson is censuring Denham, as Edinger supposes, for a failure of the visual side of the metaphor to afford images. Following the implied logic of apposition, Edinger assumes Johnson’s insertion of the qualifying phrase “thus artfully opposed” implies that the comparison he refers to is each individual antithesis formed by the artful opposition of terms. The two sides of the comparison are not the first and second term of each antithesis, but rather the vehicle on one side and the tenor on the other: the river and the poet’s style. If we accept that Johnson means the entire conceit when he refers to the “comparison,” we see that, in Johnson’s view, most of the words in Denham’s conceit are literally applicable to the river but only figuratively describe the intellect. For Johnson, this represents an impropriety in the structure of the analogical relationship of the metaphorical components because that which is figurative, the intellect or imagination, is transferred over to an image, the river, where the descriptive terms have a different literal meaning. The concept of “mixed wit” is helpful in understanding Johnson’s critique of Denham because in Denham’s metaphor the descriptive terms, which form the comparison, function simultaneously on both sides of the analogy. It is important to recognize the difference between a pun, which Addison terms “false wit,” which is simply an accidental coincidence of language, and an instance of “mixed wit,” where the double entendre is formed by a secondary, figurative sense of the word that proceeds from a perceived resemblance to its primary meaning (250). Addison’s theory, which defines a specific type of metaphor in which the analogy is partly true and partly a verbal felicity, provides a plausible basis for Johnson’s criticism of Denham’s lines. The crux problem he detects is that words like “deep,” “clear,” “gentle,” “strong,” “o’erflowing,” and “full” have literal meanings in a material context, but the abstract transference of those terms into an immaterial context, such as creative processes of the intellect, requires the terms to function figuratively. Understood in terms of “mixed wit,” the analogy is built partly upon puns that exploit the double meanings of the descriptive terms. It is precisely this facility with which we revert to figurative language which Johnson mistrusts in the structure of metaphors such as Denham’s, where words are pressed into functioning both literally and figuratively at the same time. The problem with Johnson’s idea of metaphoric literalism is that all languages “express intellectual operations by material images.” This is precisely why Johnson’s hypothetical language, which does not express operations of the intellect in material images, is only hypothetical. (b3 recto) A perfect example of this would be the word Johnson uses to praise the manner in which Denham’s “resemblances” are collected: “perspicaciously.” It is incidentally noteworthy that two of the first three examples of the word “perspicaciously” in the OED are from Johnson. Definition 2 is an abstract application of the term which relies on other abstract terms taken from material processes, such as “penetrating,” “perceptive” and “discerning” to define its meaning. The OED definition employs physical terms, such as “quick”, “slow” and “sharp” to explain the mental signification of “dull,” supporting Richards’s contention about the physical origin of abstract terms. The figurative, verbal structure of the analogy which Johnson recognizes is apparent, but Johnson’s judgment that the lines are thus imperfect indicates a narrow view of metaphorical decorum. By this he means that although an overly scrupulous reading of the conceit would recognize a lack of perfect analogical propriety in the terms of the metaphor, the arrangement and structure of the metaphor is such that the relations of the terms on both sides of the conceit make sense to the reader. The fidelity of the analogy is not found in the terms taken individually but in the antithetical relations of the terms to each other. These relational analogies, the separations of virtues from concomitant faults, are the resemblances which Johnson celebrates as “perspicaciously collected.” The metaphor is not simply a verbal felicity that compares a set of literal qualities with a corresponding set of figurative qualities; It would seem that although Johnson is troubled by the figurative application of Denham’s terms to the intellect, he recognizes the fitness of the antithetical relations of the terms in both the vehicle and the tenor. Edinger cites one of Johnson’s own images from “The Vanity of Human Wishes” as an example of a metaphor which observes his own guidelines for a proper metaphor. But the use of terms that “are to be understood simply on one side of the comparison, and metaphorically on the other,” which Edinger observes as the propriety of Johnson’s metaphor, is precisely Johnson’s complaint about Denham’s lines. They are literally applicable to an image of fireworks, just as Denham’s terms do, in spite of Edinger’s claims, afford a literal image of the river. But, like the terms in Denham’s conceit, Johnson’s four verbs, “mount,” “shine,” “evaporate,” and “fall,” are to be understood figuratively when applied to the tenor. What Johnson makes evident with this conceit, he fails to acknowledge in his criticism of Denham: namely, that the analogy of an abstract process to a material one can be evinced by the use of figurative speech—and this can be the proper ground of a successful metaphor. “[E]vaporate” is a particularly problematic word from Johnson’s image because it is a technical, scientific term which is only understood in Johnson’s metaphor because of its position between two other common, figurative terms. As a type of metaphor, the structure of Johnson’s fireworks image is similar to that of Denham’s Thames conceit. In Denham’s metaphor, it is not the qualities themselves, but the analogous relations of the terms in each of the four antitheses that accounts for the fidelity of the comparison. The image from the Life of Cowley avoids the problems Johnson discusses in Denham’s conceit because it is a simile that does not require any of its terms to function simultaneously on both sides of the metaphor. In Denham’s lines, depth and clarity of the river are compared with depth and clarity of intellect, pressing the terms to function both figuratively and literally.

THE GUTSHOT…I think that the gutshot draw is the most misunderstood draw in poker. Youll often hear people at a low limit game exclaim I cant believe your drawing to your gutshot or I never play gutshotsWhat these people are instinctually getting at is the fact that hitting a gutshot is a pretty big longshot. When you have a gutshot draw, you are drawing to 4 cards to complete your straight and lets assume that all of your outs are clean (meaning, when you hit it, you will win…although that certainly isnt the case at a real table.) So on the flop, we have 4 outs with 47 remaining unknown cards or 1 in 12. Ill peel with as little as 6 to one if conditions are right. Here are some situations and the odds I like to have to continue…A strong gutshot holding JT on a 874 board is a great gutshot and you often need as little as 7 to 1 to peel on this board. Your gutshot outs are all to the nuts, your not worried about counterfeits, plus you have two over cards that will sometimes win you the pot when you hit it.Slightly weaker gutshots are those that are interlocked where you only have one over card. Its still a draw to the nuts so getting 7 to 1 is about right to peel.Weaker still are the gutshots that are embedded without over cards. Its still a draw to the nuts, but you really dont have any other draws.

From Jeremiah 49:16, God says:Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the Lord. How high is your nest? Unless in each advance in what we think is holiness, we make the increase of humility our study, we may find that we’ve been delighting in beautiful thoughts and feelings, in solemn acts of consecration and faith, while the only sure mark of the presence of God, the disappearance of self, was all the time lacking.

Array-ne In a post on MSN Search’s Weblog, Ken Moss (GM, MSN Search) says:In collaboration with Chris Burges and other friends from Microsoft Research, we now have a brand new ranker. This new ranker also is based on technology with an awesome name — it’s a Neural Net.Microsoft Researcher Chris Burges was the lead author on a 2005 paper called Learning to Rank using Gradient Descent that does appear to try to use neural networks for relevance rank. While applying machine learning techniques to relevance rank for web search is common, using neural networks is not. We take a bunch of data, propagate it through the network (basically, take a bunch of weighted sums of the inputs and munch them together), and get values out of the network. This is supervised learning, so we start with a bunch of data that says things like, For a search for personalized news, the most relevant search result is Findory.com. We then take that and a bunch of other data, run it through our network, and try to teach our system to do the right thing, to always say Findory.com when we ask what the most relevant search result is for a query for personalized news. The tricky part of this is training the network, which means learning what all the weights should be on all the links in the network.

I especially like this snippet from Sanaz’s blog: so we get to scoble’s office, pick him up and drive back to redwest to steve’s office to do the interview!!! (My blog high-fives your blog!) This all happened about the same time I re-read Mr. Lippert’s How Many Microsoft Employees Does it Take to Change a Lightbulb? paper, the personal blogs that include work-life gripes, the employee negative comments within blogs, and the anonymous blogs like this one are "steam-blowing" Come on, outsourcing can not be consuming computer science jobs at that rapid of a rate, especially given the low quality programming results I’ve seen from overseas so far. Finally, one theme that pops up quite often in folks who post comments here and say they used to be Microsofties but left and now work elsewhere is: life is so much better now that I don’t work at Microsoft. I’m just one terrified voice screaming from the back seat that we’ve taken a horrendously wrong turn into a bad, bad neighborhood (Cut Alley, Product-Slip Row, and naked emperors in .NET stockings on every corner - shudder) and need to turn this car around and get back on the right route.

If Europe defaulted to Euro scepticism, or if European nations faced with this immense challenge, decide to huddle together, hoping we can avoid globalisation, shrink away from confronting the changes around us, take refuge in the present policies of Europe as if by constantly repeating them, we would by the very act of repetition make them more relevant, then we risk failure. This is not a time to accuse those who want Europe to change of betraying Europe.

Ok - maybe it is just 88 lines about me. Or - maybe it is just 88 lines of confessions from me. Either way - this is all about me.1. I honestly believe that yelling at my computer screen affects the outcome of the cards that fall on the flop, turn, and river2. I am selfish as all hell - though I don’t always appear that way3. Sadly I love cigarettes more than just about anything in the world 4. When I sit at a poker table, I honestly do believe that I am the best player at that table. The day I stop believing that is the day I quit playing. 5. I derive sinful pleasure from check-raising when I have the nuts6. I would rather win a pot with the hammer than with any other hand 7. My greatest gift in poker is patience, my worst flaw is undervaluing my hands8. My favorite job ever was working as a bartender. I would do it again for minimum wage without tips if I had to 9. Women in general piss me off with their girly ways. However, when I find women that I respect and like, I will go out of my way to be in their company10. I like cards, beer, golf, fishing, baseball and football more than most things in life.11. I like being alone way more than I should 12. I like cats and dogs equally, and will spend hours trying to convince people that I need to adopt every stray I find - though I never actually do13. I do not goo and gush at the sight of a baby14. I believe in the power of meditation15. Though I am from Canada, if you ask me the temperature I will probably tell you in degrees F16. I probably use the words ‘eh’ and ‘dude’ more than any other word in the english language17. I hate brandy. I used to hate scotch, but have since acquired a taste for it and would drink it any day of the week18. I love beer. Any kind of beer19. There are approximately 2000 people in this world who know me only by the nickname Bobo. It is a really long, boring story why20. I did not listen to any kind of heavy metal in the 80’s, though I really like it now21. I used to ride a skateboard, and lived for quarter and half pipes22. The longest crush I ever had was for a guy named Rob Oliver. I have no idea where he is now, and don’t really want to know 23. I love cooking, and will spend seventeen hours straight making a meal if I have to 24. Money is not the reason I do things, yet I do dream of being a millionaire25. I have never dated anyone based on what they looked like26. If I go to a bar, the last thing I want to do is dance27. I can not sing. At all. Don’t ask me to, cause I won’t28. I do, however, love singing when I am alone29. If I had to pick one famous man to be my ‘ideal’ - it would be John Corbett30. There are times in my life when I feel completely and utterly lost, and others when I feel invincible31. Sappy commercials make me cry. So do game shows32. I am a contradiction of terms, and I am ok with that 33. I always had short hair as a kid, and I now refuse to cut it. I also refuse to cut my daughters hair and cried the only time I ever did. 34. I think you learn more about people when they are drunk than when they are sober35. I am left-handed, so chances are I will die 4 years before most of you36. I play hockey, golf, and baseball with both hands though37. All my favorite teams are from Michigan. I have said that before, but it bears repeating38. My favorite foods are chicken wings, ribs, cedar-smoked salmon, and rare steak39. I could never be a vegetarian - though I agree with the principles40. If I could live anywhere, it would be Vegas. I am sure I would be sick of it within 2 months, but I am willing to risk that41. I have never been off this continent42. If I could travel anywhere in the world - it would be Italy. No question43. I willingly studied Latin. And Russian. 44. My favorite wine is a Chateauneuf De Pape, and it is not that expensive45. I love c
